Nestled into the picturesque greenery of rural Summit County lies Richfield, Ohio. It's a quiet, conservative, small town with great schools, low crime, affordable taxes, and endless opportunities. It's a part of the Akron metro area and lies between Cleveland and Akron. It's only a 20-minute drive to either city. The proximity allows its citizenry to enjoy the benefits of rural life and the conveniences of those much larger towns nearby. Richfield is a terrific place to live, raise a family, and retire. Indeed, of its 3,600+ residents, many are middle-aged or older.
If you spend some time here, it's easy to see its charm and want to stay. One of the most famous residents certainly did. John Brown, the famed slavery abolitionist we know from our history books and the raid on Harper's Ferry, fell in love with the town in the 1800s and had three homes here. One of those homes, a known stop on the Underground Railroad, can still be found on Route 303 today. Unfortunately, you cannot tour it, but you can visit Oviatt House, another famous Underground Railroad stop in Richfield. In 2020, town members rallied to preserve the Oviatt House as a historic site, thus saving it from scheduled demolition. It speaks volumes about the community's values, strength, and determination.
There are many special places you might want to visit here. As you might expect, history is integral to the town's identity. You'll find two exceptional museums here to explore. The Museum of Western Reserve Farms & Equipment is a fascinating stop focusing on the region's agriculture. Richfield is synonymous with farmland. Even its name, rich field, is a nod to its fertile soil. On the other hand, Farnham Manor is a majestic, ancient home that offers a glimpse of colonial life—and death, if the rumors are to be believed. It's purported to be very haunted.
Richfield Heritage Park is a beautiful wildlife preserve for nature lovers that features numerous hiking trails and two of the prettiest lakes you'll find anywhere in the state. Another terrific nearby park is Furnace Run Metro Park. A picnic at the Furnace pavilion is a wonderful way to spend the day.
Richfield offers excellent dining experiences as well. Whitney's Booze N' Burgers is a local favorite. You can grab a pizza at Theresa's, some wine and Italian treats at Michael Angelo's Winery, and even indulge in some Ukrainian fare at Olesia's. But, whatever you do, don't miss the five-star-rated Country Maid Ice Cream. As quaint as can be, this tiny, idyllic spot off the beaten path has its own fruit orchard across the street and features some of the best ice creams in the world, let alone Ohio. As one happy customer commented, "It was as if we were eating the fruit." How sweet is that?!
