Chagrin Falls, Ohio

The people of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, know what it feels like to be the center of attention. That expression usually has a negative connotation, but not in this case. Named after 1700s French trader Francois Seguin, the waterfalls at the center of the village were once the industrial center of Northeastern Ohio. The Chagrin River runs through the town center, and the waterfall's 20-foot drop once powered nine mills. With the money generated by the mills, settlers built houses around the river, which were the foundation of modern-day Chagrin Falls.

Ghostly Inhabitants

The area is the center of paranormal activity. The 2015 book "The Ghosts of Chagrin Falls" is 20 chapters of otherworldly stories gathered from the experiences of the locals. Almost thirty percent of the nearly four thousand residents claimed to have seen at least one.  Not all the stories are of the haunting variety, but the spirit in the Chagrin Valley Athletic Club, formerly a schoolhouse, is. The evil school mistress's punishment of a young girl leads to the child's death. Sounds of a cracking whip and a child's sob have been heard in the club's library.

Time-Honored Arts And Crafts

Also running through the city's heart is the area's artsy atmosphere. There are six artistic-based organizations here, and the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre, founded in 1930, is one of the country's oldest community theatres. It was the first group to perform Man of La Mancha outside Broadway. Thousands of patrons enjoy the theatre annually, and it has been recognized for the quality of the productions.

For a more interactive artistic experience, head on to the Glass Asylum. Step back in time and try your hand (and lips) at glass-blowing. Guests choose the type of glass they'll create, from tumblers and bowls to flowers and animal figurines. The company's artists can create a piece for those less daring, including some amazing lighting pieces such as chandeliers and sconces. Workshops and events take place throughout the year.

Be A Part Of History

Annual events bring the community together, and none is more beloved than the Blossom Time Fest. The festival has taken place since 1948 and is an authentic taste of Americana. The parade is a throwback to a simpler time, and you may find yourself in the middle of a pie or gyro-eating contest. Other events include carnival rides, walking and running races, the Taste of Chagrin, hot-air balloon rides, etc.

Tradition is at the heart of the area, and The Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop has been cranking out treats since 1949. Popcorn is not the only sweet on the menu. You can enjoy homemade ice cream, custard, and locally roasted coffee. Join the list of patrons, including professional athletes, celebrities, politicians, and Presidents. For a bit more adult fun, try the Blind Squirrel Winery. The handcrafted wines are made on-site. Come in for a tasting, live music, or take a wine tour.
